The government shutdown could start affecting food programs that help the elderly and women and children.
The Alabama Dept. of public Health announced Wednesday that the federal government has provided additional funds to allow Women, Infants and Children (WIC) programs to continue operate.
The Alabama WIC Program will continue to see participants and issue benefits through the month of October but after that the program's future is uncertain. Participants will be limited to one month's issuance of food benefits.
It's a supplemental nutrition program for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and women with babies, infants or children under the age of five.
