The federal furloughs hit some parts of Anniston hard. Hundreds are out of work, but it could be worse.
The Anniston Army Depot remains open for business as usual. Depot commander Colonel Brent Bolander issued a written statement which reads:
"Anniston Army Depot's workforce is paid with appropriated funds through Army Working Capital Funds. We have sufficient funds to carry us into fiscal year 2014. Unless the guidance changes, we will continue to operate under normal conditions by coming to work and providing the required equipment to the warfighter."
That is good news for the 4,300 civilians who work at the Depot to provide industrial and technical support to joint services for repair and overhaul of combat vehicles, their components, artillery, and small caliber weapons.
Across town at the former Fort McClellan property, the buildings and parking lots at Homeland Security's Center for Domestic Preparedness. Before noon, nearly 1,000 began their furloughs.
Another Homeland Security division, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, houses inmates at the Etowah County Detention Center.
"ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, as well as ICE Homeland Security Investigations will remain operational under a government shutdown because they have been deemed law enforcement necessary for the safety of life and protection of property."
