The forced removal of Native Americans from tribal lands across the Southeast in the 1830s will be remembered with a Trail of Tears memorial in Gadsden. The Gadsden Times reports the Trail of Tears Memorial will open on Saturday at the Elliot Community Center.
The memorial will reportedly feature 30 metal panels that depict the events experienced by tens of thousands of Native Americans as government troops forced them to march to the Oklahoma territory. According to The Times, the panels were designed by Etowah Historical Society President Danny Crownover, who told the newspaper the memorial is set up like a trail designed to help visitors understand what happened.
According to AL.com, organizers of the trail believe this is the first memorial in Alabama to remember the Trail of Tears and hope the free attraction will be embraced by the National Historic Trail System.
