The former head of an anti-poverty group in the state has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $500,000. The Associated Press reports 63-year-old Ruth Gayle Cunningham pleaded guilty on Tuesday to stealing from the Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity, an agency that assists low-income people around Birmingham.
Cunningham is reportedly the former executive director of the office and pleaded guilty to using funds from the organization to make monthly mortgage payments on numerous houses owned by her or her daughter.
According to the AP, a 34-year-old mortgage broker in Hoover pleaded guilty in a related case and Cunningham’s 31-year-old daughter will reportedly enter a guilty plea next week.
Cunningham faces sentencing in January and may get a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
