A 2012 presidential candidate will be returning to Alabama on Thursday. The Associated Press reports former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum will be speaking at a political rally at the Tuscumbia Depot.
Alabama Republican Party chairman Bill Armistead said it’s rare for Republicans to hold a major event in northwest Alabama because it’s traditionally been a strong Democratic area. Armistead also told the AP that the GOP made inroads in last year’s elections when a Republican won a seat on the Colbert County Commission for the first time since the 19th century.
Santorum carried 11 states during the Republican primaries in 2012, including Alabama, and was second to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Armistead said Santorum’s visit shows the GOP is working to make more inroads in next year’s midterm elections.
