(WDNG) - A man in the Saks area has reportedly fallen prey to what police believe to be an international scam. Police reports indicate a 55-year-old Anniston resident reported $217 was stolen from him Monday afternoon.
Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks said the victim received a phone call asking him to purchase a prepaid Green Dot card. Sparks said the victim was under the impression he would be reimbursed with more than $9,600 from the caller after purchasing the card and sharing the card information.
Sparks said there has been a recent jump in the number of these types of crimes throughout the eastern U.S. and they are typically linked to international scammers. Sparks said this is the first similar case he’s seen in The Model City in more than a month and reminds residents that if it “doesn’t sound realistic, don’t do it.”
