Quintard Mall staff were busy Monday reassuring the public that the mall is safe, and fighting rumors to the contrary, after an incident over the weekend.
Brooke McCulley, marketing director for Quintard Mall, said Monday that the mall is safe for all customers, despite rumors that sprung from what she called a minor crowd-control incident on Saturday.
“There are a lot of rumors going around but they are just that – rumors,” McCulley said. “People do not need to be worried.”
On Saturday, Oxford police responded to a large crowd in the mall’s food court around 8 p.m., after several shoppers reported a fight might be under way. The police report did not indicate the exact size of the gathering, but noted a fight had not occurred. The group consisted mainly of teenagers, McCulley said.
Lt. L.G. Owens of the Oxford Police Department said Saturday that a 16-year-old in the crowd started using obscene language towards the police at the scene and took off running when the officers approached him, knocking down several mall shoppers in the process.
After being taken into custody, the youth was taken to Coosa Valley Detention Center and charged with obstructing governmental operations, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
McCulley said mall officials closed the shopping center at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, about 15 minutes earlier than usual, as a crowd-control measure.
“It was just to ensure the safety of shoppers,” McCulley said. “This is not a typical experience for our shoppers and no one was harmed as a result of this incident.”
Exaggerated rumors about the incident spread around Oxford and Anniston during the remainder of the weekend.
“Quintard Mall remains a safe shopping environment for you and your family to visit at any time,” McCulley said. “We encourage all parents to enjoy the shopping experience with their children and supervise their actions at all times. Management wishes to express our sincere gratitude to each shopper, merchant and the Oxford Police Department for their support and loyalty.”
