An Alabama man wants to make sure a homeless man gets more than a pat on the back after turning in a bag with more than $40,000 inside.
Glenn James been homeless for years and has been staying at a shelter in Massachusetts.
Monday, he came across a book bag outside a TJ Maxx in Dorchester, Mass. It was filled with $2,400 in cash and nearly $40,000 in travelers checks and a passport.
Instead of running with it he turned it in. He received recognition for his good deeds Tuesday but Ethan Whittington, a man James has never met, wanted to see he got more than just a pat on the back.
"In all honesty I was only expecting you know a couple donations here and there. One hundred, two hundred maybe," said Whittington.
Living thousands of miles away and not even having a connection in Massachusetts, Whittington wanted to do something for Glenn after reading his story Monday.
So, he set out to raise money on the website www.gofundme.com.
"Last night I checked again and it had gotten up to about $5,000 and I said, 'Oh man, this thing is taking off pretty quick,'" Whittington said.
By 5 p.m. Tuesday the total had reached $38,000 and two hours later it was close to $50,000.
"When I read the story yesterday about this man you know being in the situation that he's in and doing the honorable thing it makes you feel good. It makes you feel like there's still people in this world that still care," said Whittington.
The goal is to reach $50,000 but after seeing the outpour of support Whittington said the sky is the limit.
His only hope is that he can pass on a positive impact for Glenn just as he had unexpectedly done for Whittington.
Whittington talked to James Tuesday afternoon who has asked for financial guidance.
Since Whittington started raising money for James he has had an outpouring of support offering suggestions for housing, jobs and everything in between.
