The shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. prompted the Etowah County Sheriff's Office to step up efforts to train the public on how to deal with active shooters.
Last week, local principals attended a training class. Sheriff Todd Entrekin planned to have public versions of that class next month, but the Navy Yard shooting prompted him to move up the class and schedule more events.
He says the "Run, Hide and Fight" course has been a success with a lot of positive feedback.
"We're just giving you the classroom version, of it, so you'll know, when it happens, where to go, know your surroundings, you know, how to react, if this happens and you're somewhere...if you're in a mall, if you're in a grocery store, you're at your office building," Entrekin said.
The first class will be held Thursday, Sept. 26 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Etowah County Sheriff's Office, located at 827 Forrest Avenue. Those interested in the class nede to register by emailing ltaylor@etowahcounty.org.
