A Pell City man pleaded guilty Friday in Calhoun County court to the 2004 murder of an Anniston taxicab driver.
Michael Tait Puckett, Jr., 30, entered a guilty plea in Judge Malcolm Street Jr.’s courtroom Friday to shooting Linton Shirey, a taxicab driver with Andy’s City Taxi, on Aug. 10, 2004. Puckett received a sentence of 25 years which will run concurrent with a sentence of 35 years he is currently serving for first degree robbery.
Assistant District Attorney Sheila Field, who was set to prosecute the trial this week, said she did not expect Puckett to plead guilty, and was “shocked” when he addressed Shirey’s family who were present in the courtroom.
“He said he was terribly sorry for all that had happened,” Field said. “That’s all the family wanted to hear.”
Field prosecuted Puckett in 2009 for first degree robbery. Puckett was convicted of robbing a taxicab in Anniston in 2004.
Field said evidence against Puckett included testimony from a former girlfriend who said Puckett admitted to the murder.
Puckett was alleged to have approached Shirey while he was sleeping in his cab near an abandoned building in Anniston and shot him in the head. He was alleged to have stolen $63 from the cab.
