Kayla Payne, 27, is facing charges of forgery, theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and identity theft, according to investigators with the Centreville Police Department.
Police say Payne worked for H&R block in Centreville for two years, and while employed there, she took out refund loans in the names of customers who sought her services in preparing their 2012 taxes.
According to Centerpoint police investigator James Northcutt, many of the victims were friends of the suspect and were oblivious to the crime until police began its probe into Payne.
"They [the victims] were not aware of it at the time. A lot of them hadn't checked their taxes that they were suppose to get back," Northcutt said. "When we got to contacting them, some of them were up to a thousand dollars short."
After several months of investigating, police arrested Payne Monday. She has since bonded out of jail.
Northcutt said H&R Block is conducting its own investigation. So far, the company has paid back more than $5,800 to victims as they continue to learn the scope of the fraud.
"They are taking care of the rest of them as they find out who they are," said Northcutt.
