Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin is offering training to school administrators this week on how to keep students, faculty and staff safe.
The training sessions, called "Run, Hide, Fight," teach techniques that can used in the event of an active shooter inside a school. The program takes its name from the three options available in such a situation, according to the Alabama Department of Homeland Security:
Run - Making a safe escape. Hide - Is there a viable hiding place? Fight - Can you take out the shooter?
The administrators will take part in two sessions on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
In a news release, Entrekin said the training sessions are part of an overall security plan. All the department's deputies have taken part in specialized training for an active shooter scenario and been outfitted with equipment and safety training. The department has also offered citizens' firearms and safety courses, with more than 400 people taking part.
A similar safety seminar for the general public is being planned.
