The Auburn Tigers wore down the Arkansas State Red Wolves before pulling away with the win on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The Tigers pushed right into the endzone during their first possession. In a 10 play drive, Auburn covered 67 yards. The score was made by Marcus Davis, who carried a Nick Marshall pass 18 yards. Cody Parkey's extra point was good.
Arkansas State replied with a 14 play drive, but they weren't able to match the Auburn score. After covering 58 yards, the Red Wolves were forced to make due with a field goal. Brian Davis' kick set the score at 7-3.
Auburn didn't delay on adding another touchdown. Their next possession saw an 8-play drive cover 85 yards. Although the drive was pass-heavy, Corey Grant made the score with a 17-yard rush. Cody Parkey added the extra point.
In the second quarter, Auburn added another touchdown to their lead. With 2:20 left in the half, Sammie Coates crossed the goal line after carrying a Nick Marshall pass for 68 yards. The score stayed at 21-3 when going into the half.
The Red Wolves came out of the locker room and seemed to make the right adjustments, but the Tigers were able to keep them out of the endzone. An 11-play drive covered 71 yards, but was stopped at the Auburn 4 yard line. Brian Davis kicked the 21 yard field goal.
A fumble by Auburn QB Nick Marshall afforded the Red Wolves another shot at getting a touchdown. Despite starting off at the Auburn 17 yard line, a series of missteps pushed them back to the Auburn 25. Brian Davis once again took the field and boosted the Arkansas State score to 9 with a 42-yard field goal.
Auburn negated the Red Wolves' efforts on their next possession with an 8-play drive. Tre Mason capped the drive with an 11 yard rush into the endzone and Cody Parkey a kicked the extra point. Going into the 4th quarter, the score was set at 28-9 in Auburn's favor.
Things slowed down for both teams in the latter portion of the game. Eventually, Auburn found the opportunity to add to the score. An 11-play drive got the Tigers 67 yards closer to the goal, but it was not enough for a touchdown. Cody Parkey took the 35-yard kick and boosted Auburn's score to 31.
With less than 2 minutes to go, Auburn grabbed one last touchdown to cap off the win. Cameron Artiss-Payne rushed across the endzone with 1:43 remaining in the game. The extra point set the score at 38-9, the final score for the game.
Next week, the Auburn Tigers face their first SEC challenge with Mississippi State coming to Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
