The Sylacauga Police Department says a local man was killed on Friday after attempting to cross a railroad track.
Officers say they were alerted to the incident around 10:44 a.m. They responded and met with railroad officials.
At the scene, the body of Howard "Smiley" Leonard was recovered from the tracks 100 yards east of Broadway Crossing. Witnesses told the officers Mr. Leonard was crossing between cars while the crossing arms were down and the train was stopped. Apparently, Leonard could not get clear when the train started moving.
The Talladega County Coroner pronounced Leonard dead at the scene. Family members were notified by Chief Chris Carden and SPD Chaplain Mark Ledbetter.
"This is a tragedy; I have known him as Horace "Smiley" Leonard since I was a kid. He will be missed by many people as he has become as much a part of Sylacauga as anything. Our hearts go out to the family," said Carden.
