Calhoun County's Sheriff Larry Amerson is planning to switch parties and run as a Republican in the race for sheriff's office in 2014.
"We will run the sheriff's office as we always have, when the same people and the same service. If someone comes to us for help they are going to get it the same way they always have," Amerson said.
Amerson plans to meet with the Calhoun County Republican Party on Monday. He has been the sheriff of Calhoun County for 17 years as a Democrat.
Amerson also currently serves the head of the National Sheriff's Association, a title only held by one other Alabama sheriff, former Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ted Sexton.
