The Hyundai Motor Company's Montgomery automobile plant is setting sales records, and crews are working around the clock to produce more vehicles that ever for hungry consumers.
Hyundai Motor America Wednesday announced an all-time August sales record of 66,101 units, up eight percent versus the same period in 2012. U.S.-built Santa Fe, Sonata and Elantra continue to be in hot demand, with dealer stock levels just half of competitor levels. Fleet mix for the month was 12 percent.
"You always hear about the strong summer selling months but it's still particularly gratifying to experience it first hand, as we did in August, leveraging high consumer demand with a great lineup of products to continue our string of record- breaking volume months," said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of national sales. "We have good momentum, innovative marketing and incentive support, excellent inventory balance, and a steadily improving economic climate so we feel pretty bullish about the final four-month home stretch of 2013."
The plant could soon start recruiting workers from a nearby high school.
Hyundai announced record-breaking sales numbers in August. So big, the production plant can hardly keep up with the demand.
"The inventory on the ground is about 30 days, and sometimes less...," says spokesman Robert Burns. That's even with employees working around the clock.
"We have to continue to work 3 shifts, 24 hrs a day, a couple of Saturdays in August..." Burns added.
So the plant will welcome new, skilled workers that Elmore County educators are hoping to soon produce.
"Take baby steps towards creating career academies," says Elmore Co. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Langham.
Langham met Wednesday with businesses in the River Region in hopes of creating a partnership to teach high school students the skills they need to move right into a career when they graduate.
"It truly will give real-world experiences that will be that direct link with the local career opportunities," Langham explained. He says they are in the first steps of such a process.
Burns says Hyundai's Montgomery plant cranks out about 1550 cars a day, about half are Sonatas and the other half Elantras. It built 37,000 vehicles in August, another record.
The numbers are big and could easily keep growing.
"Who knows what the future holds for this facility..." Burns says.
The plant employees 3,100 full-time team members and another 400 temporary workers to fill in when people are out
