Alabama’s farming industry is expected to follow nationwide growth this year. The Associated Press reports state Department of Agriculture commissioner John McMillan says Alabama farmers are in line to have the same 6 percent growth in income as farmers nationwide this year.
He reportedly said Alabama’s largest farm product, poultry, is 9 percent ahead of last year’s levels and attributes that growth to strong overseas demand and the leveling of costs, including energy and feed.
According to the AP, McMillan says the cotton, corn and soybean crops look good, but heavy rainfall may cause peanut farmers to fall short of their usual production. The AP reports peanut crops in the state usually generate about $210 million per year.
