The Auburn men's golf team has been ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek preseason countdown after finishing No. 19 in the rankings last season.
Junior Michael Johnson, who finished last season with a 72.85 stroke average, was singled out as the Go-to-guy by the publication, noting an impressive summer which included winning the Alabama State Amateur and Dogwood Invitational titles. Senior Niclas Carlsson (73.45 stroke average) and sophomore Jake Mondy (73.57) were also listed among key contributors for the upcoming season.
"We are looking forward to the upcoming season," Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. "Our team is young but we have loads of talent, so I am anxious to see the team compete this fall."
Auburn's recruiting class, which consists of Matt Gilchrest, Victor Henum, Will Long, Blake Messer and Victor Wiggins, was also labeled stellar by the publication. Gilchrest won the FootJoy Invitational along with two other top-five finishes in AJGA invitational. Henum represented Denmark in the World Amateur Team Championship and finished fifth in the Portuguese Amateur. Long was the runner-up at the Carolinas Junior and third at the Azalea Amateur while Wiggins was a U.S. Amateur qualifier and top-five finisher at the North Carolina Amateur.
Senior Blake Soni (74.83 stroke average), junior Dan Stringfellow (75.71) and sophomore Ryan Benton round out the team.
Auburn's first competition will take place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate on The Farm in Dalton, Ga., Sept. 6-8.
