Multiple local and national agencies participated in a countywide seizure of dogs Friday in regard to a multi-state federal case on dog fighting. On Friday, Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed that law enforcement served search warrants and arrest warrants at multiple sites in Lee County that day and that a considerable number of dogs were confiscated in the process as part of a years-long federal investigation spanning several states in the South, several years and numerous agencies regarding dog fighting. Jones said the participating agencies in Lee County included his office, the Auburn Police Division, the Opelika Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Service, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States.
In addition, Jones confirmed deputies investigated areas in the southern and western parts of the county, which include the Marvyn and Waverly communities, as well as south of Opelika.
“It was a multi-state investigation and today’s operations in Lee County were mirrored in other states simultaneously today,” Jones said.
Jones said the dogs recovered by law enforcement were being treated by veterinarians and were taken to animal shelters to be kept until the investigation is complete.
Jones said he appreciated the federal response to assisting in the dog rescues Friday and that their resources helped to stop a crime that the county does not stand for.
“Certainly, we’re all very much dedicated to doing what we can to stop this type of activity,” Jones said.
No other information was available on the seizures.
