(WDNG) - Nearly $500,000 will be going to six Alabama counties to help in traffic safety enforcement. Law enforcement in Cherokee, DeKalb, Etowah, Jackson, Madison and Marshall counties will be receiving more than $491,000 in grant money to cover overtime pay for officers conducting DUI checkpoints during the nation “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
According to a release from the governor’s office, the grant money will also allow area law enforcement agencies to boost enforcement for local safe-driving campaigns throughout the year. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign runs for the weeks before and up to the Labor Day weekend. It is similar to the “Click It or Ticket” campaign which takes place around Memorial Day.
The money is being made available to the state by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Etowah County Commission is reportedly the fiscal agent for the grant.
