(WDNG) - Alabama Power is warning some customers about an unusually effective scam. Alabama Power spokesperson Ike Pigott on Tuesday said that customers have been approached by people pretending to be company representatives and told they have a short deadline to make a payment.
Pigott says that scammers will direct customers to a local retailer to purchase a reloadable debit card for the given amount. They are then reportedly instructed to call a phone number and share that account number. He says this particular scam targets commercial power customers that more than likely have a larger bill.
Alabama Power says they will be calling commercial and industrial customers with a brief message about the scam. Pigott says if you are approached by someone claiming to be an Alabama Power employee, either ask for identification of call their 24-hour customer service number at 800-245-2244.
