(WDNG) - A commemorative gaslight in Anniston will be dedicated to the men and women who made up the 1961 Freedom Riders. City and business leaders will be in Anniston on Thursday to unveil and dedicate a “Lighting the Way” commemorative gaslight as a permanent marker in the Model City.
According to an Alagasco release, the gaslight is located with the Freedom Riders mural on Gurnee Ave. across from the original Greyhound bus station. Anniston mayor Vaughn Stewart said in a release last week that the lamp’s radiance will serve as a constant reminder to follow the Freedom Riders’ lead in the fight for justice.
Thursday’s dedication ceremony is expected to begin at 10 a.m. and Freedom Rider Hank Thomas will also be in attendance.
Anniston’s gaslight is one of five in the state and was voted by Alagasco employees as a significantly historical location of the Civil Rights movement. Gaslights have also been dedicated in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. A final gaslight will be unveiled next month in Selma.
