Unemployment numbers from across the country show Alabama had the second lowest rate in the Southeast in July. The Associated Press reports numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show Virginia’s 5.7 percent unemployment rate in July was the only state rate lower than Alabama’s 6.3 percent.
Alabama reportedly had one of the nation’s biggest drops in unemployment from one year ago when the rate was 7.6 percent. According to the AP, only seven states exceeded Alabama’s drop of 1.3 percentage points over the last year.
Unemployment rates in neighboring Georgia sit at 8.8 percent for July, and rates in Tennessee and Mississippi are reportedly at 8.5 percent.
