A new college football bowl game will be landing in the Yellowhammer State in 2014. AL.com reports ESPN and Montgomery city leaders joined football conference executives on Monday to announce plans for a six-year bowl game in the Alabama capital.
The newly-formed ESPN-owned Camellia Bowl will reportedly pit the Sun Belt Conference against the Mid-American Conference. Former Troy University athletic director Johnny Williams currently runs the Raycom College Football All-Star Classic and will reportedly serve as the bowl’s local director.
According to AL.com, officials say the date of the game will depend on the calendar and TV because everybody moves around the NFL schedule. ESPN officials were reportedly impressed with the Alabama State University stadium but felt a bowl game would be easier to promote from the city-owned 25,000-seat Cramton Bowl.
The Camellia Bowl will be the third of its type in Alabama behind the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile and the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham.
