State officials say courts will need an extra $8.5 million in funding to avoid layoffs. The Associated Press reports Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore says he will need assurances that the courts will get the extra state funding or he will have to lay off about 150 employees.
Gov. Robert Bentley is reported as saying he has sympathy for the court system but added that the state General Fund budget is already tight and he doesn’t see the $8.5 million being awarded.
According to the AP, the state’s $1.7 billion General Fund for the new fiscal year starting in October is already 0.4 percent larger than the current year’s budget. Budgets for the court system are expected to increase by about $5.4 million.
The only funding increase that is larger is the $16.7 million jump in funds to the state prison system.
The AP reports part of the court system’s financial problems come from a law the Legislature passed to raise the fees for being in court. The law was expected to raise about $25 million per year but Moore said it hasn’t even raised half of that since many people either can’t or won’t pay the fees.
