It seems like reporting on the popularity growth of WDNG.net is like reading the side of a fast moving train. We have just passed the 500,000 market according to Alexa.com, the industry’s authority on website rankings. (The lower the number, the higher the site’s popularity.) As of today, our ranking is right at 480,831. We also have 1,259 sites linking in. These back links are considered by Google and Bing as public votes regarding the quality of a site. The Anniston Star’s site has 1,152 back links. The rest of the media companies in the area have 65 or fewer back links.
In the first few days of June 2013, WDNG.net’s Alexa ranking passed the one million mark for the first time in its history. The one million level is considered by most authorities, to include major advertising agencies, as the credibility level for a website. Currently only WDNG.net and AnnistonStar.com have achieved that status. It took less than 45 days for WDNG.net to break the 500,000 level.
AnnistonStar.com (156,298) and TV24.tv (1,994,595) are the other two major media players. The Star’s site tends to be drifting downward in popularity while TV24’s site has shown some improvements lately. Ala810.com, which surged in late April, has dropped to 8,068,079. WTDRThunder.com, which had also surged back in April has dropped to the 20,000,000 range and as of the last few weeks appears to be offline and no longer a viable competitor in the online media arena.
WDNG.net serves three primary markets. As the local community radio for Anniston, we provide a community-based information and entertainment service for our home city and the surrounding cities of Oxford, Jacksonville, Weaver, Piedmont, and Talladega. We also serve a wider 18 county area of northeast Alabama and northwest Georgia. And, we provide various content services to a national and international audience.
While broadcast radio remains a vibrant media resource, the advent of the Internet is increasingly becoming a part of information and entertainment scene. Thus many radio stations around the country are embracing the potential of the Internet as a way to better serve their audiences.
