(WDNG) - A man is in police custody for allegedly killing his girlfriend and leaving her body in a Coldwater dumpster. Employee’s of the Rite Aid pharmacy at the Coldwater Creek Shopping Center discovered a body in a dumpster around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Birmingham police said the body is that of 20-year-old Sara Aletha Mitchell, a Birmingham woman last seen by family members on Wednesday, July 31. Her boyfriend, 23-year-old Justin Clarence McConico is being held in Haralson County, Georgia, awaiting extradition back to Alabama for capital murder charges.
Haralson County Sheriff’s Cpt. Teresa Pilcher said that authorities in Georgia first made contact with McConico at the Interstate 20 welcome center near Tallapoosa around 2 p.m. on Thursday for traffic violations.
According to Pilcher, the man’s sister travelled from Birmingham to Haralson County after he called a relative asking for money. McConico then reportedly confessed to his sister that he had killed his girlfriend.
Pilcher said that the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office then began working with law enforcement between Georgia and Birmingham to locate Mitchell’s body. McConico is expected to be returned to Alabama sometime this week.
