(WDNG) - The body of a Birmingham woman has been discovered in a Coldwater dumpster. Birmingham police on Monday said 20-year-old Sara Aletha Mitchell of Birmingham was reported missing when family members last saw her on Wednesday, July 31.
Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens said on Monday that her body was found in a dumpster behind the Rite Aid on Highway 78 in Coldwater around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night. He said the Oxford Police Department had been in touch with Birmingham police late Thursday night in reference to the missing woman.
Birmingham police are investigating Mitchell’s death as a homicide. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office will release information about the cause of death.
A capital murder warrant has been issued for Mitchell's boyfriend, 23-year-old Justin Clarence McConico. Haralson County Sheriff’s Cpt. Teresa Pilcher said that authorities in Georgia first made contact with McConico at the Interstate 20 welcome center near Tallapoosa for traffic violations around 2 p.m. on Thursday.
According to Pilcher, his sister travelled from Birmingham to Haralson County after he called a relative asking for money. McConico then reportedly confessed to his sister that he had killed his girlfriend. McConico is currently being held in the Haralson County Jail awaiting extradition back to Alabama.
