(WDNG) - Some satellite television subscribers have lost access to a popular Birmingham network. Satellite television provider DISH Network says they have failed to reach an agreement with Raycom Media, the owner of WBRC-TV in Birmingham and 52 other stations across 18 states.
DISH Network programming director Sruta Vootukuru on Thursday says the impasse between Raycom and DISH was unable to end before the July 31 deadline. Vootukuru added that DISH has negotiated hundreds of local retransmission agreements and offered to pay Raycom the same rates as primary competitors.
In a statement on their website, WBRC contends the negotiation impasse was particularly disappointing because all other TV providers in the area have agreements “fundamentally similar to the one we have been negotiating with Dish Network.” DISH Network says Raycom is asking for four times the amount of money to carry the programming.
DISH subscribers in Huntsville and Montgomery will not have access to NBC affiliates until an agreement between Raycom and DISH Network can be reached. The blackout does not affect other providers, including DirecTV, AT&T U-verse, or cable.
