A new federal study puts Alabama third in the nation for the highest imprisonment rate. The Associated Press reports a study by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics says Alabama last year imprisoned 650 people for every 100,000 residents of the state.
Imprisonment rates in Louisiana and Mississippi were higher than Alabama, with 893 and 717 per 100,000 residents, respectively. Maine has the lowest rate at 145 people per 100,000 residents and the national average was 480 people per 100,000 residents.
According to the AP, the new study mirrors a similar review done by the Pew Center on the States in 2005. According to that study, Alabama ranked sixth nationally in the incarceration rate for prisons and local jails combined.
