(WDNG) - Back to school shoppers will get a tax holiday this weekend to stock up on needed supplies. Gov. Robert Bentley on Tuesday said the cost of school supplies can weigh heavily on a family’s budget, especially families with more than one school-aged child.
He says that the tax-free weekend will not only save families money on school supplies, but also give shoppers an incentive to support local businesses, both large and small.
According to a release from the governor’s office, the tax holiday will cover a wide range of items including clothing and computers.
The back-to-school tax holiday was started in 2005, and this year will begin on Friday morning. The holiday will continue through Sunday, August 4.
Along with the state suspending its 4 percent sales tax, many counties and cities are also participating. Calhoun County and many cities within the county, including Anniston, Oxford, Jacksonville and Piedmont, are also taking part.
Alabama Revenue Commissioner Julie P. Magee said the holiday helps taxpayers stretch their family’s back-to-school budget a little further while also providing a boost to retail communities.
