(WDNG) - The governors from two southern states are partnering up to study oil sand resources in the south. Gov. Robert Bentley and Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant announced on Saturday they have signed a memorandum of understanding to commission an assessment of oil sands.
According to a weekend release, the assessment will be conducted as a joint effort between the Geological Survey of Alabama State Oil and Gas Board and equivalent groups in Mississippi. Bentley said by taking this action, the potential for safe and reliable development of energy in Alabama can be explored.
Various studies have been conducted over the years regarding the Hartselle Sandstone. Recent data shows an estimated 7.5 billion barrels of oil are located in the reserves. Bentley said “we all see the future promise of alternative sources of energy. However, these sources will not be able to fulfill all of our needs for a long time.” He added “that means fossil fuels will continue to be an important source of energy for the foreseeable future.”
This assessment will reportedly help better understand the resources available by considering logistical and legal matters which may affect commercial deployment across state lines.
