(WDNG) - Proposed allocation of a 2012 tax increase in The Model City leads to political drama at city hall. Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart along with three council members ultimately voted down a hotly contested resolution introduced at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting.
Tuesday’s resolution sought to earmark money from a general one percent tax increase that was approved in 2012. Council member David Reddick’s proposed resolution sought for one quarter of that money be earmarked specifically for education purposes.
Reddick didn’t have much support from colleagues, but scores of residents and parents provided cheers and applause in a crowd of more than 100.
More than an hour of public comment dominated the already busy agenda in a night that also saw approval of the August Rumble on Noble motorcycle festival and a transfer of more than $121,000 to the Public Education Foundation of Anniston.
Anniston youth track and field team A-town was also recognized for their upcoming competition in the Junior Olympics this weekend. 18 local athletes qualified to take part in the annual competition being held in Detroit, Michigan this year, and individuals on the team have won dozens of medals this year at competitions in Florida and South Carolina.
The group is made up of teens and children as young as 6-years-old that compete in various track and field events across the country. They will be travelling to Michigan at the end of the week for the most current competition.
The crowd gave the team a standing ovation for their success and provided even more applause upon learning a vast majority of team members are also honor roll students within the Anniston city school system.
