(WDNG) - Numbers released from the Alabama Department of Labor on Thursday show Calhoun County’s preliminary June unemployment rate at 7.5 percent, up from 7.1 percent in May and down from last year’s 8.6 percent. The county’s labor force held steady between May and June, but saw 252 fewer people employed in June.
Alabama’s preliminary June unemployment rate is 6.5 percent, which is down from last month’s rate of 6.8 percent and well below last year’s June rate of 7.6 percent. Wage and salary employment across the state reportedly increased in June, with gains occurring in the hospitality, construction and trade sectors.
Neighboring Talladega, Etowah and St. Clair counties saw slight increases in unemployment rates in June, while Cleburne County to the east held steady. Shelby County continues to see the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 4.5 percent and Wilcox County has the highest at 15.8 percent.
