Alabama’s governor and some state officials are dismissed as defendants in a suit that challenges Alabama’s new regulations on abortion clinics. The Associated Press reports U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson on Tuesday removed Gov. Robert Bentley as a defendant based on an agreement by all parties. He also reportedly removed officials from the state boards for nursing, medical licensure and medical examiners on Monday.
Bentley’s attorney told reporters he had no role in enforcing the new law. According to the AP, the suit does not change because several public officials remain as defendants. Abortion clinics in the state are challenging a part of the law that requires doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.
Judge Thompson has reportedly put the new law on hold while he considers the suit.
