(WDNG) - Police catch two metal thieves red handed at a residence in the extreme northern part of the city. Anniston police on Monday morning arrested 40-year-old Christopher Wayne Ripka and 24-year-old Larry Allen Swann, each on third-degree misdemeanor theft charges.
Anniston police Cpt. Allen George said officers were dispatched to the 6400 block of Weaver Road when a caller reported an unknown vehicle parked along a nearby treeline. Shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday, authorities found a 1999 Jeep Cherokee parked on the property of the caller’s mother.
According to George, that Jeep with a trailer had two white males, a white female and a child. The men allegedly told officers they were picking up loose scrap metal.
During the investigation, the 81-year-old woman who owns the property arrived and told officers she did not know the occupants of the Jeep. The two men were charged with theft of about $100 worth of scrap metal and said the female and child had no part in the incident.
Swann and Ripka were both taken to the Anniston City Jail and were released on Monday, each on a $500 bond. Both are expected in court on August 31.
