It's news some parents at Sun Valley Elementary were hearing for the first time. "I'm more upset that I found out from you than from the school. It's like they call and they tell us about everything else," said Carla Hollder, sister of a student. In a written statement from Birmingham City Schools, "A boy in the class reportedly used a syringe to stick two other boys." Parents of the victims were contacted and both students were taken to Children's Hospital for testing.
As a parent of two students who attend the school, Madreah Catron wants to know, "How do you leave home with a needle. How did it get in your possession?" Those are the questions Birmingham Police Sergeant Johnny Williams and investigators are trying to answer. Their main priority now is finding out what was in the syringe. "It had some type of substance inside. We're sending it to have it evaluated to see what type substance it is," said Sgt. Williams. Parents were upset about the situation. But what angers them the most, is the lack of communication on the school's end. "I would like the school to keep more informed on what's going on. If something was going on in the school our kids are still going here." said Catron. "Just kind of surprised that you know we didn't know about it. Just kind of makes you wonder what else goes on that you don't know about," said Sherman Collans, a parent and basketball coach at the school. Only the parents whose children were involved were notified. One of the victims is home resting. The second victim's condition is not known.
