(WDNG) - State officials confirm an illness that has left 67 people sick in Sumter County is salmonella poisoning. The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed five cases of salmonella poisoning after tests performed by the Alabama Bureau of Clinical Laboratories.
A release on Friday says several people continue to be hospitalized after about 100 people ate a meal on July 6 after a funeral at a church in the Sumter County town of York. Preliminary results suggest the illness spread due to cross contamination during meal preparation. An investigation has reportedly resulted in hospitalizations in at least 10 states and all states have been notified.
State officials launched an investigation after a report from a local hospital claimed that several people had been seeking emergency room care with symptoms of fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that salmonella is commonly found in raw and under-cooked meat and eggs.
