State officials are reported as saying no Alabama counties should be left out of a federally operated health insurance exchange. The Associated Press reports the state Insurance Department says Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and United Healthcare have filled proposals for statewide coverage. 50 of Alabama’s 67 counties currently have proposals from Kentucky-based managed healthcare company Humana. All three companies will have to get final approval from the federal government.
According to the AP, the federal government will operate the exchange in Alabama because Governor Robert Bentley was opposed to a state-run exchange and wants no part of the federal Affordable Care Act. $2.4 million in federal grants have been awarded to 13 state organizations to help uninsured citizens learn about new insurance options.
