The Alabama Department of Corrections is now investigating cases of alleged abuse against inmates. The Associated Press reports a recent release by the Equal Justice Initiative claims inmates were abused at facilities in Elmore, Bibb and Donaldson counties.
Department of Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas is reported as saying two cases involved alleged sexual abuse of inmates in Bibb and Donaldson counties have been turned over to district attorneys for prosecution after forensic tests were performed.
According to the AP, a review of Tutwiler prison was conducted last year by the Department of Corrections and the National Institute of Corrections. Thomas says he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of an outside audit into allegations from female inmates claiming sexual harassment.
AP reports say the Equal Justice Initiative reports came after former correctional officers pleaded guilty in the 2010 beating death of Rocrast Mack at the Ventress Correctional Facility.
