The Hoover man accused of drowning his wife on their honeymoon has been acquitted. Gabe Watson is a free man but his story still has lots of people talking. Residents in the Russet Woods subdivision say they are relieved this case is over.
"I'm glad for him and now he can move on with his life. He can move on to the next step because it's been a really long time for him," Christina Smith said. Smith lives down the street from Watson and she said he has remarried since Tina's death in 2003. Smith says Watson's new wife has been living in the home and even remodeled it recently. Smith is looking forward to Watson returning to his old home but not everyone is so forgiving. "Even though he was acquitted he's going to have everyone's shadow of a doubt. They're still going to wonder 'Well how did this happen initially and how did you get off?'" Merrily Serota, who's familiar with the case, said. During testimony prosecutors claimed Watson drowned Tina for insurance money but that theory isn't holding up with Lisa Holder who's been following the case. "The life insurance, well that wasn't even going through 'til the next year so if he was going to kill her why don't he wait a year and then go scuba diving?" Holder said. "It's scary to know someone would be this close to us and still be able to walk around. I don't know that I would talk to him unless I truly felt safe," Serota said.
