Legislation signed by Gov. Robert Bentley on Wednesday will allow a review of the state’s fleet of vehicles. Gov. Bentley held a ceremonial signing for Senate Bill 57, which will allow the state Department of Transportation to review state agency fleets and develop a statewide program to cut costs and increase efficiency in operating state vehicles.
Bentley said in a release on Wednesday the goal of the program is to find the lowest possible cost per mile driven on state vehicles. Approximately 8,800 state-owned vehicles are operated by various agencies but no program is in place to manage vehicles throughout various entities.
Legislation signed Wednesday establishes ALDOT as the department responsible for assessing the state’s vehicle fleet and developing a streamlined management system. An assessment of the state’s fleet is expected to be completed by September 30, after which ALDOT will finalize a detailed plan to meet the needs of agencies using state-owned vehicles.
