A state lawmaker has announced he will resign after the end of the month. The Associated Press reports Republican Representative Jay Love of Montgomery announced Wednesday he will resign from the Alabama House effective August 1 to pursue business opportunities and promote education reform.
Love has served in the state Legislature since 2002 and is currently the chairman of the House Ways and Means-Education committee that prepares the state’s education budget. According to the AP, his replacement will be chosen in a special election that will be called by Gov. Robert Bentley.
Even with the resignation of Love, Republicans will still have a 65-38 advantage in the House with one independent and once vacancy. Love told the AP leaving the Legislature will allow him to continue working to reform education from the private sector while devoting more time to pursuing business opportunities that “public obligations have required me to neglect.”
