State officials are saying a food-borne illness has left 36 people ill in the western part of the state. State Department of Public Health spokesperson Dr. Mary McIntyre says more than 100 people attended a funeral last weekend at a church in the small town of York in Sumter County.
At least 30 people have been hospitalized and reportedly listed in serious condition. The Associated Press reports preliminary tests through the Alabama Bureau of Clinical Laboratories are positive for salmonella. According to the AP, an investigation into the food-borne illness outbreak has been launched after people in eight other states were hospitalized.
McIntyre is reported as saying a local investigation was launched after 25 people were admitted to emergency rooms last Saturday and Sunday with fevers, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
