(WDNG) - The Anniston City Council on Tuesday heard a proposal from Norfolk Southern representatives to close the railroad crossing at F Street near South Noble Street. A letter from Norfolk Southern to city officials last month supports a Federal Railroad Administration goal of consolidating 25 percent of at-grade crossings.
William Miller is the manager of grade crossing safety for Norfolk Southern and told the council during Tuesday’s work session that roughly 22 trains travel through The Model City each day. Those trains cross roads at six locations throughout the city.
Two crossings closest to the F Street crossing are at 4th Street near the Amtrak train station and at Chestnut Avenue where South Noble Street ends. Maps show the F Street rail crossing gives roughly four dozen homes access to south Anniston within half a mile. Mayor Stewart told the representatives he and the council would consider the matter.
