The last of four former correctional officers charged in the beating death of an Alabama inmate goes on trial in Montgomery. The Associated Press reports former Ventress prison officer Joseph Sanders will be in a Montgomery courtroom this week, charged in connection with the 2010 death of former inmate Rocrast Mack.
The events reportedly started when a female correctional officer hit Mack and he returned the blow. The AP reports testimony in previous court proceedings showed Mack had severe bruising, teeth missing and a swollen brain after being beaten outside of a prison dorm, office and infirmary.
Monday’s court proceedings come after former officers Matthew Davidson and Scottie Glenn pleaded guilty to conspiracy and violating Mack’s rights. A third officer Michael Smith was convicted last month and faces life in prison for the death, cover-up and obstruction of justice. According to the AP, Davidson and Glenn each face up to 60 years in prison for their roles in the beating death.
Defense attorney Jim Parkman is defending Sanders and also successfully defended former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy on accounting fraud charges in 2005 and state Sen. Harri Anne Smith on bribery charges in 2012.
