A tugboat accident in the Gulf of Mexico results in Mobile becoming a rescue port for a cruise ship. WALA-TV reports the Carnival Conquest cruise ship was diverted to the Port of Mobile on Sunday after the U.S. Coast Guard closed access to a busy New Orleans shipping channel.
The closure reportedly comes after a tugboat accident near the Mississippi River in New Orleans closed access for many ships, including the Carnival Conquest. This is the second time this year Mobile has become a safe haven for Carnival cruise ships after the Carnival Triumph limped into the port in February after several days stranded at sea.
Immediate reports don’t suggest any injuries were sustained in the tugboat accident and officials with the Alabama Cruise Terminal tell WALA-TV the Conquest is scheduled to depart Mobile on Monday afternoon.
