The 4th of July is a time when many dogs and cats go missing. No, it's not because your sister's kids accidentally let them out, nor is it because there is a secret pooch party going on somewhere. It's because of the fireworks. Those beautiful, bright lights in the sky, popping and flashing repeatedly after the sun has set. We all sit in our lawn chairs or anchor out on the lake ooohing and aawwing over the spectacular light show in the sky.
While we stare in amazement of the bursts of color twinkling down like raindrops, many of our animals are running for cover. Some will take off like their tail is on fire without the slightest clue that the screen door is actually supposed to keep them in the house, not just an obstacle to run through.
They may find the tightest hole in the foundation of your neighbors garage to squeeze through to get away from the big, scary noise and flashing lights. I have to believe it would be the same feeling that the Americans felt when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor!
Please take a little extra precaution this year and keep your dogs, cats, and other animals safe and secure. Keep them in the house, in their crate, in a separate room, even on a leash. A dog with a 6 foot leash following him is much easier to spy and catch than a blur of fluff shooting across the yard.
You may help your fur babies ease some of the stress by giving them a treat or toy to occupy their mind. Try to remember to do this shortly before the commotion begins so he can become a bit more involved with the distraction prior to the celebration.
Swaddling an animal maybe an option as well. Just as a new born baby likes to wrapped up tight, so may your animal. There is a product on the market called a Thunder Shirt that gives that snug, secure feeling your dog may need. They are a bit spendy due to the material and Velcro design, but can double as a coat for your pet in cooler weather.
Most animals are going to be fine as soon as it's all over with. Some may take a bit to come out of hiding. I recommend not forcing them to participate with your family until they are ready and seek your attention.
Happy 4th of July everyone! Be safe and keep those fur babies safe!!!!
Be Blessed!
