An Alabama Congressman joins more than two dozen other federal lawmakers in fighting same-sex marriage. AL.com reports U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks of Huntsville has joined U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp, a Republican from Kansas, along with 27 other co-sponsors in promoting the Federal Marriage Amendment.
The amendment reportedly seeks to change the U.S. Constitution so it declares marriage in the United States “shall consist only of a man and a woman.” According to AL.com, the measure was proposed on Friday, only two days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution’s due process clause means that the government cannot block federal spousal benefits for same-sex couples.
The measure did not, however, declare state bans against same-sex marriage unconstitutional. In order to pass a constitutional amendment, two-thirds of both the U.S. House and Senate have to approve the proposal. 38 states must then ratify any proposed amendment.
U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks is reportedly the only Alabama congressman who has signed on to the measure.
