Alabama moves closer to having 100 percent of law enforcement officials trained to handle an active shooter incident. The Times Daily in Florence reports about 776 state and local law enforcement officers have received the training since March.
Active shooter training was reportedly designed to respond to mass shootings or a threat in a crowded space but was never required of officers until recently. Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier told lawmakers on Monday that only about 30 percent of officers statewide had received the training earlier this year. According to the newspaper, that number is now closer to 50 percent.
State officials began discussing the training after the Connecticut elementary school shooting last year. The Times Daily reports about $400,000 has been allocated for training law enforcement to handle active shooter threats.
